70 Years of Adventure

This cake was created for Susie who is celebrating her 70th birthday! Her daughter ordered the cake and when we originally spoke she was thinking a tiered cake to feature all her mother's interests and some of her life's adventures. I was having a difficult time coming up with a plan for a cake that would make sense w/ all the different themes they wanted the cake to include (favorite sports teams, hobbies, travel, states she has lived in, "world's best grandma", etc). I was afraid the cake would look very choppy with so much going on and no main design to pull it all together.
.
Then I came up with a solution that I think pulled it off nicely...a suitcase covered in stickers...70 Years of Adventure and all along the way Susie has been adding stickers to her suitcase. Daughter loved the idea and we went for it. :) My new printer w/ edible ink came just in time for this one! All the stickers were printed on wafer paper with edible ink and then applied to fondant.
So here it is... Susie's 70 Years of Adventures!

  1. I'm a friend of Susie's daughter's, and when she sent me this link this morning I couldn't believe how amazing the cake turned out. How creative it was of you to turn her ideas into this amazing suitcase that celebrates her life. Wish I'd been there to eat a piece :)

  3. Very Nice! You mentioned in your post that you just recieved your printer with edible ink. I've been looking into this and was wondering what brand do you have? Are there any pros/con's? Something you would steer anyone away from, or towards? Any info to help a fellow decorator! My email address is emailme12@comcast.net
Thanks so much, keep up the great work!

  6. Hello - I love this cake! I am attempting something similar for my Dad's 65th birthday party this weekend, though I am not a professional by any means so I'm sure it won't be nearly as lovely! I'm just wondering - did you do anything extra to apply the edible sheets to the fondant? I'm wondering if it should be brushed lightly with water or piping gel first, or if the fondant is "wet" enough for the images to stick on. Thanks for any suggestions you can provide!
